Hana Abu Khadra Salem
Hana Abou Khadra Salem, class of 1973, is an advocate of special needs and a pioneer of inclusive education in Lebanon. In 2017, she founded the Next Step program at AUB, which is a revolutionary university-based transition program for intellectually-challenged young people. During the past 25 years, she accompanied her daughter Zeina, who has Down syndrome, in her journey through inclusive education to provide her with the best learning opportunities. Ultimately, Hana became a reputable figure on special needs education in Lebanon. Through Next Step, not only did she give these people the opportunity to live independently and claim their right to a proper education, but she also gave them the chance to live a fulfilled life. Hana was even acknowledged by Dr. Fadlo Khoury, the president of AUB, for all her hard work and achievements. In addition to that, Hana's voice was heard in the United Nations Headquarters in New York when she was asked to shed light on the status of inclusive education in Lebanon.
